Grow your own Veggies

Birds Eye Grow your own Campaign.

Now we are new to gardening (our garden consists of a deck and a small corner of bark). We are by no means considered green fingered, we do however enjoy vegetables and salads and with the recent rises in food prices we have been keen to grow our own.
As luck would have it Birds Eye are currently running a 'Grow your own' campaign to conincide with celebrating 65 years or growing vegetables.
The lovely chaps over at Birds Eye sent us some seeds, trays a trowel and watering can to get us started. I have given these to Molly and purchased a few brightly coloured troughs for her to grow her own little vegetable patch.
I highly recommend you joining in the campaign with us by clicking here https://www.facebook.com/birdseye?sk=app_167705676678807 and claiming your own free seeds with a code from special packs of Birds Eye veg.

The chaps at Birds Eye have also provided tutorials

for you to watch which will help answer any questions.

Get in touch and let me know how your own grow own campaign is getting on this summer!

Real Nappy Week - guess what we were wearing

Now is this ironic? It was Real Nappy Week last week and I write a cloth nappy blog, so why was my baby girl in disposables all week?

Well sadly she had a nasty skin infection and nasty eczema which meant 3 lots of creams applies all day every day which were not going to be kind to cloth.

I have felt like a big fraud this week and it has been the hardest week.

Reasons I don't like disposable nappies

1) They smell. When they have a wee or poo in them there is a nasty smell. its not the wee or the poop its the reaction with the chemical. This smell varies slightly depending on brand but its always there. Changing the first nappy of the day is the hardest nastiest smell ever.... fact.

2) They leak. My Elsie is purely breastfed still and so has the runniest of poops. It leaks out the side of the nappies every time. I can not believe how rubbish these nappies are. I have touched more poop last week then I ever would with cloth.

3) Even once removed what are you to do with them. I had to carry around poopy nappies in plastic bags (and poopy clothes) most days last week. Even when I had managed to change Elsie in a baby changing room I didn't want to touch the dirty bins to stuff yet another nappy into it. The room was stinking enough.

4) Our rubbish bin has become rather full much quicker than usual.

5) Instead of a nappy wash I am doing daily poopy clothes washes because of all the leaks.

6) My baby has no big squidgy bum anymore.

7) They are so expensive. They last a couple of hours and then are binned.

8) They are so hard and dry.

9) They look really ugly.

My poor little girls skin is much better and today and soon she will be back in her cloth.

Day 2 of Real Nappy Week

So its day 2 of Real Nappy Week and what have I bought? Nothing. Not a single nappy, wrap, wipe or wet bag. I know I can't believe it either. Its not for the want of trying either. I am desperately looking for night time nappies and wraps again as Elsie seems to have chunked out considerably and our current wraps dig into her thighs.

I think there is an abundance of nappy offers and codes I just can not decide on what to order and from where. I have searched the web and various cloth nappy groups for codes and discounts.  When in fact any of these offers on there own would please me immensely just a few days ago because its RNW I just cant stop from searching out 'better' offers. I am at risk at getting to the end of RNW and there being nothing left to buy!

So if you spot any wraps or fitted nappies at exceptional value please comment or tweet me @fluffydumplings so I don't miss out.

Cleaning the Washing Machine

Now whether you use cloth nappies or not you should still be cleaning your washing machine on a regular basis. However for those of you like me who may not have done it before here's what I now do.

A table spoon of bicarbonate of soda in the drawer on a hot wash.

soda, soda crystals, washing soda, washing cloth nappies

Yes just ordinary Bicarbonate of Soda! I was a little sceptical myself of putting something from the bakery aisle in my machine but I took the plunge and I am glad I did.

I switched the machine to a hot wash (90) and switched it on whilst empty.

washing cloth nappies, washing machine clean

Now this is where I was beginning to get excited. A little sad I know but I was eager to see if it worked. Its important to look after your washing machine especially when using cloth nappies.

washing cloth
                                          Look at my sparkly drum.

I couldn't wait to do my first wash and see if there was any difference!
So what do I wash the nappies or husbands football kit? Well i didn't want to risk the nappies so the football kit was in within seconds.

It came out smelling lovely, as it always does. I have no idea if the machine has improved now its clean, but I think its one of those jobs you just have to do as a grown up. If I didn't do it perhaps i would notice?

Night time nappies

A little fluffydumplings guide to night time nappies.

There are fewer nappies that are suitable for night time then day time use. These nappies need to last the average baby 12 -13 hours approximately unless you are changing baby in the night. (who wants to do that?)

We have found several 'night time' nappies that work well for us.

Pocket Nappies
Nappies that you stuff with inserts that absorb the wee. The inserts are generally micro fibre which absorbs quickly or bamboo which can hold more but absorbs at a slower pace. The bamboo works better underneath the microfibre insert (furthest away from baby's bottom).  Hemp and charcoal are also used and have some excellent recommendations on many cloth forums. We have yet to try these!

BumGenius pocket nappies with the 2 inserts last Elsie a good 12 hours. I only have 2 of these nappies though and really prefer to use them during the day as they are so reliable and easy to use particularly if Elsie has a long day time nap.

Baba and Boo pocket with 2 microfibre inserts and a bamboo booster also last Elsie a good 12 hours. Similar to the BumGenius though we do prefer to have these nappies available for use during the day.

I recommend, experimenting with the pockets you have and adding bamboo boosters to see how they last. Perhaps put a fleece blanket down underneath your little one so if it does leak you may be able to get away without changing the whole bed - very useful if you co-sleep.

AIO All in ones.
All in ones are nappies that have inserts already attached to the outer shell of the nappy. They tend to be a slimmer fit but do take longer to dry.

Bambooty nights last us approximately 9 hours so if we pop her in one of these at the last feed before I go to bed this works well. The only downside is I am at risk of getting her too awake and having to wait a while before she is ready to go back to sleep.

Fitted and Wraps
Fitted nappies need a wrap of some sort to make them absorbent.  They do tend to be bulkier nappies but the advantage is you can often reuse the wrap (perhaps wipe down the inside between changes).

Motherease onelife with a motherease airflow wrap.  They have served us well although recently with the extra boosting they have become a bit tight on the leg and we are considering alternative wraps as making the poppered leg fastening bigger leaves too big a gap around the leg which allows the fitted nappy underneath to leak down the legs.

Motherease onelife with a little lamb. This works really well for us and as its applix we can get a better fit around the legs.

Night time nappies can be bulky but sweet.

We have spoken to our fluffdumpling friends too and here is what they had to say!

Hayley uses Monkeysnuggles with a wool wrap and her little one is dry after an amazing 13 - 14 hours!
monkeysnuggles, night nappy, cloth nappy

Monkeysnuggles are a fitted cloth nappy that need a wrap of some sort. Wool is particularly good as it allows any excess dampness from the fitted to evaporate.

Wool longies, night time nappies, cloth nappies

It works better if your baby moves about in their sleep as this doesn't allow any moisture to gather and pool.
You can also use fleece as a wrap too. You can use a fleece sleepsuit or buy fleece wraps.

night time cloth nappies, wool longies

Kerri uses a Totsbots Bamboozle on N at night time.

bamboozle, night time, cloth nappy, diaper

The above shows the fitted nappy on its own. Its a cotton nappy which would leak without a wrap. N, wears it with a Motherease wrap as shown below, or a little lamb wrap.

night nappy, cloth nappies, motherease

If you currently use disposables at night have a play around with the nappies you have or visit the pre loved boards to see if there are alternatives that suit you. If you have any questions please let me know, I can always find an answer from someone I know!

I would also like to know what works for you if you are already using cloth at night. Let me know by commenting below so I can pass it on. Thank you!
